Halq'eméylem was first written down by Europeans who visited and worked in the area in the nineteenth century. The early recordings of the language were mostly short word-lists. Charles Hill-Tout, who worked in the area in the early part of the twentieth century, collected more extensive materials, including some grammar sketches, and there were a few other stories collected, and some papers on language (including an M.A. thesis by Jimmy-Jean Harris) written, up to the 1970's, when Brent Galloway began working with the Coqualeetza elders.
