Boys' work in traditional culture included making canoe paddles. The boys were expected to learn this skill largely on their own, getting better by learning from their mistakes. Boys' work also included cutting wood, hanging and setting nets, cutting fish, skinning animals, and trapping. Often boys (like girls) would get up early, and work from daylight till nightfall. Then they would fall asleep listening to traditional stories by the light of the fire.
