Names have always been an important part of our culture. Traditional names were often kept within a single family, and when a baby was born the grandparents would name the child, and then later on the family would host a feast and let the community know the name. A child's xwelméxwelh skwíx (First Nations name) is believed to give the new child strength in their life, and to aid them spiritually in hard times.
