Arranged marriages were very common in our traditional culture. A man would ask a girl's parents for permission to marry her, and it was the parent's who would make the decision. Sometimes arrangements for inter-marriage between two families could be made even before the children who would marry had been born. Constraints against marrying close relatives, including cousins, were strong, and much attention was paid to this matter. Nowadays, of course, arranged marriages are not common at all.
