When grieving for a close family member who has passed away, Stó:lo traditional culture says that you should not do any kind of work. It was common to hire people to do crucial work for you for the period of time until the body was buried and the family was cleansed by a spiritual worker. Often the grieving period would then continue for up to one year before ordinary life was resumed.
