Some of the more common woods that we traditionally burned in our longhouses were maple and alder. Traditionally we did not burn spruce logs, fir trees, or cedar for open fires, because the smoke from these woods can be a health hazard in long-term use (though these same woods were okay in the old cooking stoves).
