The first salmon of the year was very important. As each family caught their first fish in the river, they would cut it up and give it to the elders in the community. A soup would be made, and after that soup was eaten the bones of the first fish would be removed and returned to the river. Some families had a special basket just for the bones of the first fish, and this basket would be washed in the river to make sure that the whole of the bones of the fish were properly returned. The purpose of the ceremony is to show respect for the fish.

One way to understand our relationship to the river is that the river was our garden, which had to be looked after and cared for, just as a European or modern person would care for the plants in their garden.
