In our traditional lifestyle, the ideal Stó:lō marriage was arranged between families of different villages but similar status. The family of the man made the first move by sending an older relative with the prospective groom to keep a vigil outside the house of the intended bride. The men were invited in if the bride's family believed an alliance with the family was in their interest, then the negotiation began.

Marriage between relatives as distant as fourth or fifth cousins was improper. The marriage procedure involved a dowry by the bride's family and the payment of a bride-price by the groom's family. The bride's dowry included hereditary names and other privileges for the children to come from the union. The bride was sometimes given, by her family, to a powerful shaman as payment for his services, or to a powerful warrior to obtain protection.

Most couples resided in the groom's household and village. There was an expectation that after the marriage there would be occasional exchanges of food and wealth over the length of the alliance. It the alliance was a seen as valued by both sides and one of the couple died, the family of the deceased would provide a sibling or a close relative as a substitute so that the alliance would continue. Alliances between important families, of different villages, was valued because it gave economic and political advantages to each village.
