Dropping tútl'ó, thútl'ó

With -es added onto the verb, as always, tútl'ó and thútl'ó can be omitted, given sufficient context. And with verbs that imply a receiver (what linguists call transitive verbs, as discussed in lesson 10), it will be understood that some person or thing is the receiver, even if none is explicitly stated. Putting these too things together, we sometimes find very short sentences expressing complex meanings, like this:

(1) (a) Kwútes.

He/she/it took it.

(b) Lép'exes.

He/she/it ate it.

These sentences contain only verbs. There are no actual words for 'he/she/it' or 'it' in the Halq'eméylem: they are just understood, because the -es ending indicates that he/she/it is acting on something else; the rest is just filled in by context.

Compared to English, Halq'eméylem uses much more contextual information to fill in parts of the sentence (though many other languages, such as Chinese, or Italian, are quite similar to Halq'eméylem in this respect, i.e. in allowing you to drop he/she, and so forth).
