Little' Doubling

If you double the first consonant and vowel in a Halq'eméylem word (ignoring s- , which is usually just a marker that the word is a noun), and then make the first vowel into an i sound, the result can often be used to mean 'little...'.

The process is not completely predictable, and sometimes other unpredictable changes are made in addition to the basic doubling and insertion of i; however, very many words are built around this basic pattern. Here are some examples (including some that have additional unpredictable changes).

(1) xwélmexw [Root word = 'First Nations Person']

xwéxwelmexw [Double first consonant and vowel]

xwíxwelmexw [Make vowel an i ]

Result ='Little 1st Nations Person']

(2) méle [Root word = 'child']

mémele [Double first consonant and vowel]

mímele [Make vowel an i]

Result = 'Little Child'

(3) sqwemá:y [Root word = 'Dog']

sqweqwemá:y [Double first consonant and vowel (ignoring the 's']

sqwíqwemáy [Make vowel an i] sqwíqwemáy [Additional unpredictable change, a: --> a]

Result = 'Little Dog, Puppy' (

4) theqát [Root word = 'Tree']

thetheqát [Double first consonant and vowel]

thítheqát [Make vowel an i]

thítheqet [Additional unpredictable change, a --> e in last vowel]

Result ='Little tree'

Because some forms for little... are irregular, and because even the fairly regular forms sometimes include additional unpredictable changes, you often have to learn the little... version for the word separately. However, knowing this pattern will help you to learn the form much more easily, in most cases.
