To VERB Oneself (on purpose)
As we have seen in earlier lessons, the -t ending in Halq'eméylem is commonly used on verbs where you deliberately do an action to someone else. To talk about an action deliberately done to oneself, you use a special ending -thet. This pattern is summarized, with examples, in (1).
(1) (a) VERB + t (b) VERB + thet
to VERB him/her/it (on purpose) to VERB oneself (on purpose)
(c) xólhmet (d) xólhmethet
to look after him/her/it to look after oneself
(e) q'óyt (f) q'óythet
to kill him/her/it to kill oneself
To Accidentally VERB Oneself
Instead of -thet, you can also use a different ending -ló:met (also pronounced - lómét). The -ló:met ending also means onself, but it refers to accidentally doing something to onself, as opposed to doing it on purpose.
For example, compare the following two forms (from the vocabulary list for this lesson):
(2) (a) xwkw'ótsethet (b) xwkw'ótsesló:met
Both of these words can be translated as to see onself (referring to the face, specifically). But the (a) word implies that it was delibrate, because of the -thet ending, where-as the (b) sentence implies that it was accidental, because of the ló:met ending.
Note that Halq'eméylem speakers do not always use the -thet and -ló:met endings where we would say onself (or himself/herself, etc.) in English.
