The cedar tree, which we call xpá:yelph (for the Western Red Cedar tree), is sacred to our people. We used it for all of these things: transportation (canoes, paddles, etc.); shelter (our houses, house-poles, etc.); clothing (skirts, hats, slippers, blankets, even disposable diapers); rope; fishing nets; baskets (including waterproof baskets); tables and table stands; sails for our boats; serving utensils (platters, bowls, serving spoons, etc.); storage boxes and chests; insecticide (for keeping away moths); medicine.
There were many more uses that we made of this plant, but gives you some idea of how important cedar was in our traditional lifestyle.
