If Salish languages really are all descended, thousands of years ago, from a single language, where was this language spoken? Some linguists have speculated that it may actually not have been far from where Halq'eméylem is spoken today. This idea is based on the fact that some of the words which appear to be oldest in the Salishan language (that is, which can be found in different forms across many of the languages) are names for plants that grow only in the general area where modern Halq'eméylem is spoken today. See The Stó:lo Atlas (edited by Keith Calrson, and published by Douglas and Macintyre) for some detailed discussion and references on this point.
