Within the Salish family of languages, some languages are more closely similar to Halq'eméylem than others. The most similar languages in the family are from the central coast region, and include Squamish, Lushootseed, Northern Straits, Clallam, Comox-Sliammon, Pentlatch, Sechelt, Twana, and Nooksack. Pentlatch has been extinct for some time, and Twana and Nooksack are also probably extinct (within the last few generations, Nooksack speakers mainly switched to Halq'eméylem). These languages are most similar in the sense that they share many recognizably related words, and some grammatical features, with Halq'eméylem (although none of them are mutually intelligible).
The interior and other languages in the Salishan family are more distantly related to Halq'eméylem, though all the Salish languages have a common history, and share some words and features.
