For widows constraints on behaviour during the mourning period were traditionally very strong (even stronger than the general constraints discussed above, in the notes for Lesson 4). It was said that a new widow should not use sharp things, should not eat with other people, should not attend parties, gatherings, of funerals, and should not scratch their heads or look other people in the eye. Sometimes a widow would work alone in her room, for a very long period.
