When a family experiences a loss everyone in the community helps them out, and does the work that the family members cannot carry out for themselves during the mourning period. At the funeral, as at many other traditional ceremonies, it is important for the family to thank each guest that helped out with the ceremony by presenting them with a small gift, even if it is in itself not of great value. The gift is not payment for their help, but rather a token of appreciation for their help during the time of trouble for the family.
In our culture family members do not carry the coffin at the funeral, which is said to endanger the surviving members of the family.
