There are two species of sturgeon in the area: the white sturgeon (up to twenty feet long and 1800 lbs.) and the green sturgeon (up to seven feet long and 300 lbs.). Both species live in both fresh and salt water. The white sturgeon is more common in the Fraser and the larger tributaries. The actual fishing was limited by the height of the river. In the old days the sturgeon might have competed with the salmon in importance, because the sturgeon is a much larger fish which can be caught during a larger part of the year. Sturgeon were caught with spears and trawl nets, and the catch would be divided among those who brought it in.
