Having to study our Halq'eméylem language in classes and from books is new for us. In our traditional way of life we simply grew up with our language and learned it without having to study. It is because so many of our people were put in residential schools, where we were kept from our families and punished for speaking our own language, that many of our young people today have to learn in this way.
