Before contact with white people we used the verb "x̲é:ylt" to mean "paint", "mark", or "decorate". The term applied to the painting applied to dancers for ceremonies, as well as to marks chipped into rocks ('petroglyphs'). The word "x̲é:ylt" was extended to mean "writing" when English and French people first came to the area, and we were introduced to their writing systems.
Our Halq'eméylem language was only oral, and we did not have an established writing system until the early 1970's, when the Coqualeetza elders and the linguist Brent Galloway worked together to develop the system used in this book. Some earlier linguists and other scholars had written down words using phonetic writing systems, of various kinds.
