The winter dance (spirit dance) is a gathering where both women and men each in turn sing and dance possessed by “songs” they have acquired from the guardian spirits they had encountered, early in life, through vision quests. These events are held in the season when the dancers' songs return to them in the winter, usually after the first snow.
