Because our language is mutually intelligible with the language spoken around Nanaimo and Cowichan, and because the cultural and kinship connections are so strong, one of our main trading partners was with the people of the Island. 

Some particular things that we traded for there were kelp, which we would put in soup, wind-dried fish, octopus, herring eggs, and clams.
